our daughter, taryn, has down syndrome. she had seen some films about dancing on television and she really liked it. she loved dancing so much that i decided to enroll her in a dancing class. i found a dancing class for her but the teacher would not accept her. she says she shouldn`t be in that class because of her disability, which made me really upset. why would she be so discriminating? taryn may be slow but she is very keen. what should we do?

I’m almost 17 and I’d like to start hip hop dancing classes. what should i do to prepare myself? i mean do i need to loose a bit of weight or know some dancing steps? I’m not that thin but I’m not fat but do i need to loose weight? (I’m like 125 lbs but I’m a bit tall)

Honestly, you don’t *need* to do anything, really. But if you want to be prepared, stretch some. This is a really good link for split stretches:

How old should you be to start taking Burlesque dancing classes?

There’s this new class at my dance studio, Burlesque dancing. It looks really fun. What age do you think is acceptable to start at?

In theory, I would say as soon as you’re over the age of consent but not everyone will feel the same way. To be honest I think it depends on the kind of area you live in, what kind of people will be attending the class, etc.

Also, unfortunately, it matters how old you look. If you are a very young looking 16 year old, I wouldn’t recommend taking up Burlesque dancing just yet. However as a general rule of thumb, 18+ should be completely fine. After all you are an adult at 18 and what you do with your life is completely up to you.

Although most importantly, it’s really up to you to start when you feel that you are comfortable enough. At the end of the day, it’s entirely your decision and only you will know when you are ready – by the sounds of it, I think you feel pretty confident already so my advice is don’t hold back – get down there now!

What should I wear for a belly dancing class?

I am taking a belly dancing class with my daughter. We both need modest ideas for what to wear. We need can’t show our navels and it needs to have sleeves. Also, I’m vertically challenged and fluffy (ie fat) I need something that moves but I won’t look too funny in.

Hi I’m Deborah, I have been bellydancing for 5 yrs! What I recommend is any type of yoga pants or sweat pants that are loose and not form fitting. Really any kind of stretchy pants (not shorts and no jeans) you can also wear a really long stretching skirt! It all depends on what you like As far as a shirt once again anything stretchy! It can be a cute t-shirt, it can be a long sleeve shirt, it can be anything that you feel comfortable moving in! Another thing is a lot of bellydancers will wear a tank top and a gypsy top or choli top (you can look it up). which has sleeves on it! And then one of the most important parts is the hip scarf! It can be a knit scarf or a scarf covered in coins and beads. Look up bellydance hip scarf, you should see it there. As far as hair, it can be up or down, it doesn’t matter.

First belly dancing class- are casual ballet flats okay?

They are a little worn but they shouldn’t fall off my feet- the biggest thing is that they aren’t technically meant for dancing. They do not have elastic. As I understand it, I may be taking then off anyway, but if not, are they okay for my first class?

I would recommend barefoot for belly dancing. Ballet dancing shoes are dangerous for some belly dancing moves. They are too slippery. It’s better to have the natural traction of your bare feet. You will have better balance. Belly dancing is a very earthy dance, and bare feet help you feel more connected to the ground on which you are dancing.

I always hate when I have to dance in shoes at restaurants. It’s more freeing when you can take your shoes off. Shoes are too confining for this style of dance.

What to try something interesting, just finished belly dancing… what new fun class should I take?

I have just finished about 10 months of belly dancing classes. I’d like to try something else, once a week. It doesn’t have to be dance. I’m considering yoga. Any other ideas?

Pole dancing. Its fun and sexy. Its a great workout too.

Why men gets frustated when they cannot dance in a dancing class?

I’ve met more than one guy that gets so frustraded when they cannot follow the steps in a dancing class. This is a big turn off for me because it shows that a guy cannot be patient enough to learn and give up as a failure. Why is so difficult to find men that love to dance?

They are frustrating because their dancing skills are a reflection of their performance in bed.
