Advanced Salsa Dancing Classes

what should we do if our daughter is not allowed to join a dancing class because of her disability?

3rd September 2010

our daughter, taryn, has down syndrome. she had seen some films about dancing on television and she really liked it. she loved dancing so much that i decided to enroll her in a dancing class. i found a dancing class for her but the teacher would not accept her. she says she shouldn`t be in that class because of her disability, which made me really upset. why would she be so discriminating? taryn may be slow but she is very keen. what should we do?

    Get her private lessons then.
If a teacher isn’t able to teach your daughter, then she’s just being honest not discriminating. The teacher doesn’t feel she is qualified or has the skills necessary to teach a special needs child.

Well I partially agree with what Ruby said, maybe the TEACHER can’t handle teaching a special needs child. I can see no reason why she should be denied classes. Did the teacher give you ideas for classes that she should be in (according to her) or just give you the cold shoulder? Unless that teacher owns the studio, I would ask to talk to the owner and tell her what happened. There may be another class that she could be in. Maybe a class for girls who are a little bit younger (they could be on the same level developmentaly with Taryn then girls her own age) I am not trying to be cruel or disheartening, but rather trying to show you other options. If after talking to the studio owner you still get no where, try a different studio or different dance style. I truly wish you the best of luck.

EDIT–sorry misread your name with Minty Me’s ….I meant I agree with her…sorry.
