What should we do if our daughter is not allowed to join a dancing class because of her disability?
31st August 2010
our daughter, taryn, has down syndrome. she had seen some films about dancing on television and she really liked it. she loved dancing so much that i decided to enroll her in a dancing class. i found a dancing class for her but the teacher would not accept her. she says she shouldn`t be in that class because of her disability, which made me really upset. why would she be so discriminating? taryn may be slow but she is very keen. what should we do?

Downs Syndrome kids can be really sweet, and it’s a shame. She might make a wonderful dancer – who knows? It’s an ability that knows no boundaries – I am the least co-ordinated, unable to remember a routine dancer you could ever meet – a trait shared by my son, who’s as awkward as that Chinese guy, Orl Fuk, and we’re both pretty smart, so they say.
I would have thought that teacher might stand a chance of making a name for herself – movie rights and so on – with a successful Downs Syndrome dancer. Shame really that people don’t take the time.
Find another class.

I don’t think the dance instructor can refuse to teach your daughter because she has a disability. I don’t know what you should do. I’m sure there are classes that she can take with other kids with disabilities, but she should’ve been able to enroll in the first one.
