How should I dress for a ballroom dancing class?

28th February

I'm mostly asking about footwear, but what should I wear to the class to dance as well as I can? This is my first class, please help!

You will need ballroom shoes soon, but don't buy them just yet. Take a few classes to get some idea about what your feet would need. For the first class, wear any comfortable shoes but not sneakers. Sneakers have rubber soles that will stick to the floor and make it difficult to turn. Wear shoes with closed backs that won't fall off your feet if you go backwards. As a courtesy to the dance studio, chose something with non-marking sole. Bring a pair of socks with you just in case. Some studios do not allow street shoes.

As for dress – usually there is no strict dress code, but there are some rules of good manners. You should wear somehing with slieves, even short slieves is OK. The idea is it's not nice to put your sweaty armpit on leaders's forearm. You don't want to wear sweatpants of gym clothes. Nothing wrong with it, but somehow it's not a traditional choice. Wear pants or wide skirt that allows you to step as far as you possibly can. Jeans will restricting your movement, so jeans are not a good choice. Any washeable top with slieves that doesn't restrict your movement (lift your arms to test) will be OK.

What is the best thing to wear to belly dancing classes?

28th February

I am beginning belly dancing classes and do not know what to wear. Please help…
I am chubby and do not want to bare my tummy as I have stretch marks from having a new baby.

I usually wear yoga pants with t-shirt type tops or crop tops with a hip sash, and sometimes a full, light-weight skirt. I tend to wear longer tops during winter and shorter ones during summer. Other dancers in our troupe often wear leotards, yoga pants, leggings, or bike shorts with similar tops. Some like to wear skirts, while others don't usually wear them. It depends upon what we're doing during a class, and sometimes just one's mood. Most in our troupe wear hip sashes much of the time. I've occasionally used a shawl as a hip sash for a different look. You just want to make sure it's not too long and that you're able to tie it securely around your hips. Some fabrics may be slippery and don't always stayed tied very well. Footwear depends upon the surface. Dancing barefoot is good, as it keeps you grounded. I usually wear half sole sandals, or foot thongs. http://www.discountdance.com/ has some and there are other sources. I like the barefoot look with them while they protect my feet on hazardous surfaces and from broken glass beads.

Whatever you choose to wear make sure that you are able to move easily and comfortably in it. You may feel self-conscious now, before you go to the class. Once you have been taking classes awhile, you may find that you are more comfortable with your body and opt for different types of practice outfits. Most belly dancers that I know are not waif-like at all. Many are quite full-figured. The dance can help you learn more about your body and become much more comfortable with it. I hope you enjoy your class.

Fear of Dancing and the Dancefloor

27th February

I have many a crazy friend. Some would say that I was the craziest of them all. It does not matter. Some of them I know through dancing, some of them I don’t. You want to know something crazy? Whether they’re my friends that dance for a living or my friends who can’t dance at all, they both have a fear of dancing. It seems that this crazy fear is something a lot of people have in common.

They even have a name for it now. Yes there’s a name for practically every condition out there, even people who need to switch the lights on and off seventy times while humming every note of ‘We Will Rock You’ on every off switch before they leave a room! If every one of these conditions is accurate, every single one of us on this planet is crazy and has at least a hundred different conditions. And you guessed it, there’s a frightening name for the fear of dancing, it’s called…chorophobia.

Now I don’t know about you and your friends, but I’m in no rush to send mine to the doctor’s yet…at least not for this reason! I typed in ‘fear of dancing’ into Google the other day and lo and behold, there were 2, 240, 000 websites that mention this. That’s a lot of chorophobiacs! There are hypnotherapists offering services to cure this, it is actually something that affects people’s lives.

Well let me tell you, I’ve been through this journey from start to finish. From sitting in the most comfortable chair in the world in every single room I graced where people were dancing…to being totally comfortable just dancing out of the blue on any London street. I have a dancer friend who also does gymnastics, who has no problem doing a back flip in the middle of his walking and then start dancing as if it’s as easy as 1-2-3, all while people are walking towards him from the opposite direction (credit to Scotty P Maurice).

So what’s the story? How do you get rid of the fear? Well there are basically two ways:

1. Just dance as best as you can and have fun, irrespective of what other people think and whether you look good or not.

2. Learn to dance well, and then as you build competence, your confidence will grow.

Two paths to the same destination. Of course if you choose number 2, number 1 will start to follow and you won’t care what other people think if you know you’re good!

You’ve all seen the first type, they’re dancing, you’re wondering what the hell they’re doing but they seem to be having fun and that’s all that matters. I’m sure you’ve also seen the second type, those really good dancers and thought to yourself, “Well duh, if I could dance like that, I wouldn’t be scared at all.”

Well you want to know something? A lot of those really good dancers are actually deep down scared as well. Time and time again I have seen extremely talented dancers, get ultra nervous and worried right before an audition or performance. They start doubting themselves and become blind to their own capabilities, convincing themselves they can’t remember dance choreographies and routines. And I’m talking about dancers most people would die to be as good as!

When I saw this happening, that’s when it struck me – it’s just a biology thing. It’s your body’s fight or flight response where you suddenly get that rush of adrenaline shoot up your body, jolting into every one of your nerves and making your knees become weak at the prospect of what’s to come. It could be damn good…or it could be damn nothing. And at those last moments what’s more real to you is how you could turn into nothing, the lowest of the low, the bottom of the pit and everything that could go wrong.

It could take a huge paradigm shift, a whole new shift in the way you look at life in general to erase your fear by the first method I mentioned above. In fact for some people they never achieve this shift. Carly Simon is an extremely talented musician who is known to suffer from stage fright (she used to have her bottom spanked because the physical pain helped rid her of the stage fright). If she did not have the competence or desire, she would probably have never got on stage.

But if you choose the second route (i.e. to build competence instead) it is a much more gradual experience where you desensitize yourself to the whole notion of dancing. When you have a problem, it’s usually a good idea to actually put yourself in a situation where you’ll be forced to deal with that situation and become used to it (rather than becoming used to thinking about it and talking yourself out of it).

Once you actually go to a couple of dance classes, it won’t be a big deal any more. Sure, you might still get a little nervous if you are a beginner or not familiar with the style, but you’ll put yourself in there, the fear won’t do nothing to stop you. So go ahead and dance, because there’s always a new chorophobiac just waiting to take your place around the corner (probably sitting in a chair).

Tap Dancing is Back

27th February

Tap dancing is back. Another aspect of tap dancing is improvisation, the timing of the step, the foundation of which tap dancing is built and the means by which the rhythm is based all of these factors are very important. To some it may seem that tap dancing is losing ground in the world of dance. The art of tap dancing is a culture in itself. Tap dancing is a great workout. A fun way to exercise is tap dancing; some of the benefits of dance are coordination and rhythm development. Even better, one hour of tap dancing is thought to burn around 250 calories. Tap dancing is fun for both the audience and the dancer and especially children.

You don’t really have to practice tapping on a hard wood floor. All children need practice when they are learning new skills, just like adults do. Wearing black clothing makes it much easier to see your body movements while you are dancing to the rhythm of the music.

When you become an experienced dancer, you can purchase tap shoes, they come in an many different styles, it all depends on what type of dance you are doing. Try not to wear rubber on your shoes since they get stuck on the floor, the key is to flow across the dance floor while tap dancing. Put your dancing shoes on, tap dancing is the new way to keep off the pounds. Experienced tap dancers usually invest in a more expensive pair of tap shoes and they usually run around $250. Leave your stress at home and wear comfortable clothes and shoes its time to dance. Adapting to the music while dancing is a stimulating challenge, for some it is not easy to feel the rhythm.

Balance and coordination are items that are brought up in the this class so students learn the basic tap dancing techniques. When taking a class they will break down all of the basics of tap dancing, as well as explore the foundations of body movements. Tap dancers must stretch before every performance, rehearsal or class.

Tap dancing is probably the most interesting of dance genre. Tap dancing is a good type of exercise and the routines are sometimes used in performances. Having its roots in early American Jazz, tap dancing is fun but incredibly challenging. Tap dancing is a fantastic substitute to conventional workouts to stay fit. Tap dancing is celebrated all over the world.
